April 9th, 2022 around 18:00 Pueblo West Fire Department was dispatched to mile marker 108 on I-25 for a reported debris fire. Callers reported to Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center that some cardboard on fire on the side of the road. Due to red flag conditions the fire quickly spread to the vegetation and grew rapidly. Mutual-aid was requested from Pueblo County ESB as well. Units arrived to find multiple acres burning and began making access to fight the fire. The terrain in the area made access difficult at times as crews dealt with several arroyos that they had to work in and around. The fire also threatened BNSF rail tracks and one of their officers was also on scene. Crews were on scene for over 4 hours and came back throughout the night and the next morning to confirm extinguishment due to high winds and red flag conditions that were expected the rest of the week. A large tree and slash pile in the middle of the fire provided for some of the hot spots that crews had to monitor. Additional information provided by Code 4 Photography
