At 14:42 on December 9th, 2023 Weld County Regional Communications Center (WCRCC) alerted Front Range Fire Rescue of a traffic accident with unknown injuries in the 100 block of S. 1st Pl. in Johnstown involving a trash truck and a sinkhole. Upon arrival Engine 2901 found a trash truck that had it’s left rear wheels in a sinkhole that had developed as the truck was pulling out of an alley. No injuries were reported, a large wrecker was requested, and fire units cleared scene. Battalion 2960 and Engine 2901 returned to the scene after the wrecker had arrived and it was noted that there was a natural gas line exposed in the sinkhole but not leaking. The wrecker was used to lift the truck from the hole and then was used again to remove a large piece of asphalt from on top of the gas line without further incident.
