At 13:25 on May 22nd, 2024 Colorado Springs Public Safety Communications Center dispatched the Colorado Springs Fire Department to the 1600 block of Cheyenne Blvd. for a possible confined space rescue. While units were enroute, dispatch advised an elderly female had fallen into a sinkhole ten to fifteen feet down. On scene, Engine 13 found the patient trapped in the sinkhole and attempted to gain access with a ground ladder. After Engine 13 was unsuccessful with the ground ladder, they requested a 2nd Truck Company and Fort Carson’s Heavy Rescue respond to the scene. Once Battalion 1 arrived and assumed Command, a working trapped assignment was requested. Engine 13 was reassigned as Safety Officer and Truck 4 was designated at Rescue Group. Engine 13 continuously monitored air readings during rescue operations. When Fort Carson Heavy Rescue 1971 arrived on scene they joined up with Truck 4. At 14:22, crews were able to contact with the patient and at 14:33 patient was extricated from the sinkhole. The patient was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and companies returned into service. Additional information provided by the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
