Canon City Area Fire Protection District

Cañon City Area Fire Protection District (CCAFPD), covering 122 square miles in Fremont County (Colorado) including the areas of Brookside, Buckskin Joe, Colorado State Prison, Dawson Ranch, East Cañon Complex, Eight Mile, Fourmile Ranch, Fremont Peak, Garden Park Fossil Area, Holy Cross Abby, Lincoln Park, Nonans Peak, Orchard Park, Park Center, Prospect Heights, Red Canyon Park, Royal Gorge Park & Three Mile Springs. Cañon City Area Fire Protection District started with volunteer Hose Companies and Hook and Ladder Companies that were formed throughout the city in 1879.  In 1902 the Cañon City Fire Department was organized as a paid department. In 1946 the Cañon City Area Fire Protection District was formed to serve around Canon City and is served in cooperation with the city department. In 1986 Cañon City Fire Authority was formed to oversee management of both the District and City Department. In 1992 the Cañon City Area Fire Protection District assumed all fire operations in the city limits and the City of Canon City Fire Department merged under the sole operation of the district.
