Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District (FLMFPD), founded in  covering 357 square miles in La Plata County (Colorado) including the areas of Alkali Gulch, Barnes Canyon, Blue Hill, Blue Lake Ranch, Breen, Cross Creek, Devils Canyon, Flat Canyon, Hay Gulch, Hesperus, Hesperus Hill, King Coal Mine, Kline, Marvel, La Plata Canyon, Mancos Hill, Mayday, Nevajo Trail, Old Fort, Perins Peak State Wildlife Area, Pine Gulch, Redmesa, Reservoir Canyon, Roberts Canyon, Roberts Ridge, Schoolhouse Canyon, Silver River, Vista de Oro & Wildcat Canyon. Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District started out as the Mesa Volunteer Fire Department in the late 1960’s and in 1982 the department became a fire district. 

Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District covers from the Colorado-New Mexico state line on Hwy. 140, to the top of Hesperus Hill to the county line at the top of Mancos Hill, to the bottom of Blue Hill in the Wildcat Canyon and also includes the La Plata Canyon.

Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District is dispatched by Durango / La Plata Emergency Communications Center.
