Kern County Fire Department was established in 1927 as the Kern County Volunteer Fire Department. In 1945 the department named changed to the Kern County Forestry and Fire Department.

Battalion 1 covers Station 11, Station 12, Station 13, Station 14, Station 15, Station 16 and Station 18. Battalion 2 covers Station 21, Station 22, Station 23, Station 24, Station 25 and Station 26. Battalion 3 covers Station 31, Station 32, Station 33, Station 34, Station 35 and Station 37. Battalion 4 covers Station 41, Station 42, Station 45, Station 46, Station 47, Station 48, Station 51, Station 52 and Station 54. Battalion 5 covers Station 53, Station 55, Station 56, Station 57 and Station 58. Battalion 6 covers Station 61, Station 62, Station 63, Station 64, Station 65, Station 66 and Station 67. Battalion 7 covers Station 36, Station 71, Station 72, Station 76, Station 78 and Station 79. Battalion 8 covers Station 17, Station 73, Station 74, Station 75, Station 81, Station 83, Station 84, Station 85 and Station 87.
