Big Sky Fire Department was originally formed in 1971 as the Gallatin Canyon Volunteer Fire Department. In 1979, two Gallatin Canyon Rural Fire Districts were formed to cover both Gallatin County and Madison County. Despite being separate governmental entities, they all operated as one agency. The agency started to operate the district’s EMS services in 1993. In 1994, it was discovered that having two separate districts was improper and so it was corrected by consolidating the two districts into one. In 2009, Gallatin Canyon Consolidated Rural Fire District was renamed into the Big Sky Fire Department. In 2018 the department transitions from a combination to an all-career paid organization
Big Sky Fire Department has future planes for fire stations in the Moonlight Village, Windy Pass Trail and relocation of Station 1.
