Billings Fire Department

Billings Fire Department (BFD), covering 91.46 square miles in Yellowstone County (Wyoming) including the areas of Alkali Creek, Billings, Billings Heights, Billings-Logan International Airport, Boulder Park, Cameron Park, Canyon Creek, Canyonwoods, Castle Rock Park, Centennial Park, Eaton Park, Heights, Hawthorne Park, Hesper, Hidden Park, Ironwood, Lake Elmo, Lake Elmo State Park, Lake Hills, Lillis Park, Montana State University-Billings, North Elevation, Phipps Park, Pioneer Park, Rimrocks, Rose Park, Southwest Corridor, Terry Park, Two Moon Park, Yegen, Yellowstone River, Zimmerman Park, Zimmerman Trail & Zoo Montana.

Billings Fire Department was established in 1883 as the Billings Fire Brigade. In 1886, the Yellowstone Hook and Ladder Company was founded and disbanded in 1888 and was reorganized as the Maverick Hose Company until 1918 when that company was disbanded. By 1930, the Billings Fire Department had 15 paid firefighters and 10 men on call for emergencies.  In 1943, the Mayor and City Council of Billings authorized establishment of the Billings Fire Prevention Bureau. In 1988, the O’Donnell’s Fire Service was closed and the department took over the fire service to add around 70 square miles to the fire protection area.

Billings Fire Department is part of the Billings Urban Fire Service Area (BUFSA) which is the rural portion of the community outside the city limits of Billings which is 43.9 square miles.

Billings Fire Department has mutual-aid with Blue Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Exxon Mobil Fire Department, Fuego Volunteer Fire Department, Laurel Fire Department, Lockwood Volunteer Fire Department, Molt Volunteer Fire Department & Shephard Volunteer Fire Department.

Billings Fire Department is dispatched by the Billings City & County 911 Communications Center.
