Austin Fire Department was organized as a seven-man fire protection group in 1841. The Hook & Ladder Company # 1 (H & L No. 1) was organized in 1858. Washington Fire Company # 1 was established on 6th St. in 1868. A third company, Colorado Fire Company # 2 was organized in 1871. In 1875 the Central Engine Company # 3 was established with a chemical engine at 4th
St. & East Ave. and the chemical engine proved to be unsatisfactory and the company disbanded in 1877. The Hope Hook & Ladder Company # 2 was established in 1875 and disbanded in 1882. The Hook & Ladder Company # 3 was organized in 1878 and later became Protection Hose Company # 3. In 1886 the East Austin Fire Company # 4 was established. South Austin Fire Company # 5 was established in 1895. In 1896 the North Austin Fire Company # 6 was established. The West Austin Company # 7 was organized in 1905 at 1000 Blanco St. This fire station is the oldest still standing and occupied as a fire station, currently Station 4. The Tenth Ward Fire Company # 8 organized in 1908. The last of the volunteer companies to be organized was Rescue Hose Company # 9 in 1913. In 1916 the department became a fully paid fire department.
