Boulder County Training Exercise and Prescribed Fire
Training Exercise / Prescribed Fire
On September 27th, 2025, a valuable training exercise and prescribed fire was successfully conducted at the Table Mountain property in Boulder County, located just west of Longmont. Members from multiple area volunteer fire departments participated, working together to manage the burn without incident and gain experience. The prescribed burns are an essential tool in land management and wildfire prevention. They are intentionally set under controlled conditions by experts to achieve specific ecological and safety goals: Reduce Wildfire Risk: The primary reason for these burns is to remove excess fuel—dead leaves, dry grasses, and small brush—that has built up on the forest floor. By regularly clearing this material, managers significantly reduce the intensity and size of future, unplanned wildfires, making them easier and safer for firefighters to control. Promote Ecosystem Health: Many ecosystems, like grasslands and certain forests, naturally evolved with fire. Prescribed burns help recycle nutrients back into the soil, stimulate the growth of native plants, and maintain healthy habitat for wildlife. Control Pests and Disease: Heat from a controlled burn can kill or disrupt invasive insects, plant diseases, and non-native weeds, further protecting the overall health of the ecosystem. The successful exercise at Table Mountain not only provided crucial training for local firefighters but also served to protect the property and the surrounding area by mitigating the risk of a dangerous wildfire.
