At 02:18 on January 19th, 2025 the Colorado Springs Public Safety Communications Center dispatched the Colorado Springs Fire Department to the 1200 block of Tonka Ave. for a possible structure fire. While responding Engine 5 observed a glow coming from the approximate location and called the incident a working fire. On scene, fire crews reported heavy smoke and flames coming from all sides of the home. As crews advanced interior to push back the fire and search for victims, a firefighter fell through a split-level staircase. The RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) was activated, and the firefighter was extricated from the home. The firefighter was treated on scene for minor injuries and not transported for further treatment. A 2nd Alarm was then called due to the heavy amount of fire and all on scene resources had been depleted. Once resources from the 2nd Alarm arrived fire crews continued to battle the blaze until they were able to get a knock on the fire at approximately 03:00.
