Broomfield Flag Retirement Ceremony
Flag Retirement Ceremony
The Broomfield Veterans Museum hosted a special Flag Retirement Ceremony and Cookout on June 12th, 2021 to properly retire old American Flags. In honor of Flag Day, the event took place on 2 days before Flag Day on June 14th, 2021. The president of the museum board and U.S. Navy Veteran, Luke Roman, led an honor guard comprised of members from the Broomfield Police Department and North Metro Fire Rescue District. The honor guard descended the old flag in front of the museum where it was respectfully retired. The flag code does call for the proper method of burning to be used, however new flags are made of synthetic materials and give off toxic fumes. So the code says that a flag may also be retired by cutting the stars from the stripes. A new flag was hoisted in front of the museum while a local band played the Star Spangled Banner. Hundreds of old flags were then respectfully retired by volunteers by cutting the stars from the stripes. The flag remains will then be burned at a local crematorium.
