Station 3 Ground Breaking

The City of Grand Junction, Grand Junction Fire Department, and Mesa County Valley School District 51 celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Station 3, just south of the existing building on August 24th, 2021. The new station will be built in the existing parking lot and the current station will eventually be torn down and made into a parking lot for Pomona Elementary School next door. Station 3 is currently home to Engine 3, Ambulance 3, HazMat 3, and a reserve engine. The station design is modeled after Fire Station 6 which opened in November of 2020. Currently, Station 3 is home to approximately 24 personnel who work on a 48/96 schedule. The station is aging and is no longer ideal for modern fire department staffing. The bunk room features six beds, many of which are separated by a wall or curtain and is separated from the bays by a door on either side. The gear storage area is located in the bay, exposing gear to the exhaust fumes of apparatus. The workout area is not ideal for crews and the office is undersized. The building of a new station will allow staffing to increase in the future if needed and the ability to add additional apparatus or crews such as a wildland engine. Station 3 is being replaced under city budget and was not included in the 2018 First Responder Tax which funds Station 6, 7, & 8. Students from Pomona Elementary were invited to help break ground on the station in addition several people who made this possible. In attendance were Fire Chief Ken Watkins, Deputy Fire Chief Gus Hendricks, City of Grand Junction Mayor Chuck McDaniel, MCVSD 51 Superintendent Diane Sirko, members of city council, and members of the build team including FCI Construction and Blythe Group. The station is slated for a Fall 2022 Opening.
