South Metro Residential Fire

At 18:06 on December 23rd, 2022 South Metro Fire Rescue responded to a reported house fire in the 9700 block of Ashleigh Lane in Highlands Ranch. Dispatch advised the caller reported curtains had caught fire in the basement and there were also curtains on fire in the dining room, prompting Battalion 1 to upgrade to a confirmed response. Engine 17 arrived on scene of a small two-story single family residence, nothing showing, investigating in the offensive strategy. Engine 17 and Medic 18 confirmed working fire conditions in the basement per the RP and stretched a 1 3/4″ line for attack with 360 walk-around in progress. Tower 18 and Medic 17 arrived within a minute with Tower 18A going primary search in the basement and Tower 18B outside truck operations.  Medic 17 was assigned incident medical. Command reported fire in the C/D corner of the 1st floor with no visible fire conditions in the basement. Safety 18 arrived on scene and was assigned a second 360 walk-around and dedicated safety officer. Engine 33 arrived and brought in the hydrant to Engine 17 with Engine 20 arriving behind 33 and going on deck Alpha side. Battalion Chief 1 arrived on scene, taking conditions, actions, needs, and assumed command. Safety 18 located a hole on the C/D corner where fire had burned through from the basement. Firefighters advanced a hose line into the smoke filled home and extinguished flames on the first floor and in the basement. At 18:26 fire attack reported water on the fire and fire under control in the basement. One firefighter slipped and fell on ice. That firefighter was immediately assisted by their crew and fire medics, then transported to a local hospital for further treatment of minor injuries. Crews searched all areas of the home and confirmed that all residents had safely evacuated. While working to establish a water supply, firefighters discovered the first fire hydrant was frozen and inoperable and a new water supply was established from a different hydrant in front of Engine 17.
