On April 29th, 2022 at 16:54 Poudre Fire Authority was dispatched to reports of a fire in a mulch pile on the property near 1380 Hoffman Mill Rd. on the east edge of Fort Collins. Callers reported that the fire was quickly growing and that there was heavy smoke. A second alarm wildfire response was dispatched. PFA had responded to a small fire in the mulch pile earlier in the day and the area was being closely monitored by the City of Fort Collins. The strong winds caused it to reignite. Crews accessed the fire from Hoffman Mill Rd. and the Poudre Trail. Firefighters attacked the flames in the pile which were about 10 ft. tall and set up a perimeter to keep the fire from spreading to the nearby field. They also set up structure protection for the buildings to the east as a precaution. The fire jumped from the mulch and slash pile to a strip of trees and grass immediately to the east. Crews were able to keep the fire from spreading beyond the strip. After about an hour of work, it was determined the best course of action was to let the slash/wood pile burn and continue to put water on the mulch piles while focusing on maintaining the perimeter. City loaders and other machinery spread and turned the mulch to break up the hot spots and helps create a fire line. Crews remained overnight with hots spots and monitoring.
