On November 11th, 2022 the South Metro Fire Rescue Fire Academy was put to the test during “Hell Night,” a physically and mentally challenging evening illuminated with flames. Small crews of recruits were assigned to engines, medic units and a ladder truck, tasked with responding to various emergencies across the drill ground. Recruit Training Officers and on-duty Firefighters played victims and mentors during the scenarios which included medical emergencies, unruly crowds, traffic collisions with people pinned and various fires from burn barrels and dumpsters to apartments with people trapped. In between calls the recruits lived a simulated night working at a fire station which included working out, online training, dinner and showering after a working fire for cancer prevention. Arapahoe Rescue Patrol also participated. Additional story and information provided by South Metro Fire Rescue.
