Granby Ranch Structure Fire

At 17:27 on October 4th, 2023 Grand County 911 dispatched the Grand Fire Protection District #1, East Grand Fire Protection District #4, and Grand County EMS to the 700 block of County Rd. 899 for a possible structure fire. Grand Fire Chief 301 arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire; as well as advised incoming units heavy smoke showing from the Alpha-Delta side of the detached garage. Grand Fire Engine 310 arrived on scene and was assigned as the RIT group, while Engine 333 assigned 2 members initial attack and pulled an 1 3/4 attack line, while another 2 members performed the primary search of the residence. Engine 333 engineer then established a water supply at the end of the driveway. Crews followed the smoke and flames into the attic space of the garage, as crews made entry a backdraft occurred and cause the ceiling to collapse; they then backed out of the garage without injury. Operations switched into a defensive strategy, during this transition the primary search was completed with victims found. The search team from Engine 333 then pulled a secondary line from Engine 333 to assist in defensive operations. Once the fire was declared under control, teams went into the garage searching for hotspots and conducted overhaul of the building. Grand Fire Engine 313, East Grand Engine 481, and East Grand 483 then arrived on the scene; Engine 313 was assigned to ventilation of the residence, while crews from Engine 481 and Engine 483 assisted Engine 333 with overhaul of the garage. At 19:20 overhaul was completed and companies started to return into service. Investigators determined the cause of the fire was due to spontaneous oily rags left in the garage. No injuries were reported by residents or responders on the scene.
