Front Range School Fire

Shortly after midnight on February 2nd, 2023 Weld County Regional Communications Center (WCRCC) dispatched Front Range Fire Rescue with auto aid from Loveland Fire Rescue Authority and Berthoud Fire Protection District to a commercial structure fire at the former Letford Elementary School in Johnstown, a building in the initial stages of demolition. First arriving units pulled a 300 foot line and made entry where they found lazy smoke 50% down from the ceiling and observed fire in the drop ceiling in the gymnasium. Crews then backed out of the building until additional resources arrived and sufficient water supplies were established. Exterior crews did initiate a transitional attack through a window in the gym and did observe a good knock on the visible fire. Additional units were requested and crews then re-entered the building for fire attack. Units from Windsor Severance Fire Rescue, Mountain View Fire Rescue, Evans Fire Protection District, and Greeley Fire Department all responded to the scene with units from Platteville-Gilcrest Fire Protection District covering calls at Front Range Station 2. Weather conditions at the time of the fire were difficult with temperatures in the single digits. The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
