Berthoud Residential Fire

At 01:21 on July 11th, 2024 Berthoud Fire Protection District, Loveland Fire Rescue Authority and Thompson Valley EMS resources were dispatched to a residential structure fire on Heron Lakes Drive in Northwest Berthoud. The 911 caller reported a sauna on fire in the home. Engine 43 arrived on scene and reported nothing showing from a small one-story home, Engine 43 established Heron Lakes Command. Engine 43’s officer completed a 360 size up and reported a working basement fire, declared an offensive strategy, and deployed a hose-line through the front door for a fire attack in the basement. Arriving companies received word from the occupants of the home that they had all safely exited the structure. Engines 61 and 62 established a water supply to Engine 43 and assisted Engine 43 with the initial hose-line push and deployed a second attack-line. Command was upgraded to Battalion 61, he assigned Rescue 42 to the primary search along with flow path control and Battalion 41 as the Attack Group Supervisor. Crews operating in the basement reported very high heat and zero visibility, but they were able to get some water on the fire before having to back out due to the high temperatures. As crews were backing out, they reported a spongy floor near the front door of the home. The IC ordered two more engine companies to the scene and assigned Chief 48 as the Incident Safety Officer. The Attack Group Supervisor redeployed crews to get water on the fire utilizing fog nail nozzles through the floor and exterior wall to control the difficult to reach/access fire room. As the interior temperatures dropped and smoke conditions lifted crews re-engaged in the basement for final fire extinguishment.
