Wildfire Outlook / Preparedness Plan

On April 17th, 2024 the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) presented Colorado’s 2024 Wildfire Preparedness Plan to Governor Jared Polis in Broomfield. DFPC Director Mike Morgan discussed the 2024 wildfire outlook and an overview of State resources that are prepared to combat wildfires. Colorado’s first Firehawk wildfire helicopter was on hand for the event. The Firehawk (N3811C) is a 2022 Sikorsky S-70-i United Rotorcraft (Black Hawk) and will be ready around May 10th. 2024 for wildfires throughout the state and can also fly at night. Governor Polis also has authorized the purchase of a second Firehawk helicopter which will be delivered in 2025, The 2024 Wildfire Preparedness Plan outlines a holistic, comprehensive approach to wildfire management that includes suppression and response, fuels and forest management, and mitigation activities of all types, explained DFPC Director Morgan. Colorado is a national leader in fire mitigation efforts, and we continue building on proven methods to protect Coloradans and our communities from wildfires, said Governor Polis. DFPC is committed to continually enhancing fire training, utilizing new technologies, and implementing early detection and rapid response to bolster the fight against wildland fire in Colorado.
