La Junta Attic Fire
At approximately 21:46 on January 16th, 2024 La Junta Fire Department responded to the 500 block of Cimarron Ave. for a reported structure fire with smoke coming from the attic. Engine 1 arrived to find heavy smoke showing from the attic and the crew assisted the occupants out of the house. As other crews arrived a quick offensive attack began searching for the fire. There were multiple small attics and the fire had spread quickly through them. While crews were inside tearing out ceilings and started to knock down the fire. A crew cut a ventilation hole on the roof to aid in fire extinguishment. The crews battled very cold weather at 10 degrees. Extensive overhaul was conducted to make sure there was no hidden fire in the attic. All occupants were relocated to a local hotel. No other injuries were noted. The cause of the fire was faulty wiring in the attic. All crews cleared the scene and put equipment back in service at 01:30. Information provided by the La Junta Fire Department
