At 10:50 on June 8th, 2024 Loveland Fire Rescue Authority companies were dispatched to a hazardous material incident at the community pool in the Thompson River Ranch subdivision in the Johnstown portion of LFRA’s response district. A 55 gallon drum of hydrochloric acid developed a small leak discovered by the pool maintenance contractors. Hazmat technicians from Engine 50 verified the leak and completed the needed research on the hazards of the chemical as well as potential reactions to other pool chemicals stored in the same area. Battalion 41 assumed command and established a hazmat group supervisor. Johnstown Police Department contacted the residents in the area asking them to shelter in place and secured the immediate area around the incident. Hazmat technicians donned fully encapsulated level A suits and entered the pool chemical storage area, after completing air monitoring and testing they were able to place the leaking drum into an over-pack drum to contain the leak. Sodium Bicarbonate was used to neutralize the acid that had leaked from the drum. A hazardous materials remediation contractor was contacted for clean up. Thompson Valley EMS stood by on scene completing medical evaluations of the hazmat technicians. Story and information provided by Loveland Fire Rescue Authority
