On August 3rd, 2024 Lutheran Hospital closed after serving the community for over 100 years and moved all the current patients to the new hospital campus, which is around 3 miles away in the Clear Creek Crossing, 12911 W. 40th Ave. off I-70 in Wheat Ridge. A fleet of ambulances transported around 180 patients every eight to 10 minutes with around 20 ambulances from Intermountain Health, American Medical Response, Platte Valley Ambulance Service, UCHealth Lifeline and others. The new hospital, part of Intermountain Health cost $680 million to build and has 226 rooms with a landing pad on top of the hospital. Wheat Ridge Police Department monitor the route to make sure the transports moved smooth. Many former employees and patients came out to watch the hospital close and the signs of the emergency room covered. It was emotion for some as in they were born at the hospital or have worked there for many years. The old hospital started in 1905 at 8300 W. 38th Ave. as the Evangelical Lutheran Sanitarium, which was a tent colony for tuberculosis patients. When the demand for tuberculosis treatment diminished, it was decided by community leaders to open up as a hospital, and in 1961 Lutheran Hospital was opened. In the 1970’s the name was changed to Lutheran Medical Center (LMC). In 1973 a six floor tower addition was added. In 1998, Lutheran became part of the Exempla Healthcare and in 2010, Exempla joined the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, which then became SCL Health in 2014. In 2022, SCL Health merged with Intermountain Health. Additional information provided by Lutheran Hospital
