North Metro Fire Deputy Chief Jeff Bybee Walk-Off Ceremony
Jeff Bybee Walk-Off Ceremony
A walk-off ceremony was held on June 28th, 2024 for North Metro Fire Rescue District Deputy Chief Jeff Bybee at Station 61. Deputy Chief of Operations Jeff Bybee joined North Metro Fire in 1985 when the department was a combination paid/volunteer fire department with only one or two paid firefighters assigned per engine crew. Much has changed over the past four decades as North Metro Fire has grown into professional fire department, and Chief Bybee played a significant role in pushing the organization to become what it is today. Chief Bybee, along with his brother, retired Firefighter Jay Bybee, were second-generation firefighters who followed in the footsteps of their father, who retired as Fire Chief of Lakewood Fire Department. Growing up around the fire service helped Bybee to quickly establish himself as a well-rounded, well-liked firefighter. As one of the early providers of advanced life support (ALS) care on North Metro’s fire engines, Bybee was a highly competent and caring EMT-I. Within 10 years, he promoted up the ranks to lieutenant and then captain, where he took over management of Station 64 on Lowell Blvd. in Broomfield. Over Bybee’s career he took on several auxiliary roles, such as fire investigator, and he received several awards, including a 1996 Distinguished Fire Service Award for rescuing a trapped victim from a second-floor apartment complex fire. He also was named 1998 Employee of the Year and earned the 2011 Fire Chief’s Exceptional Performance Award, along with several others. As Bybee continued to develop as a leader, he was promoted again to battalion chief in 2008. Chief Bybee was well suited to the role of battalion chief, having developed strong technical, managerial and command skills. Through this role, he set high expectations for his shift, provided great mentorship to his officers and aspiring officers and led his shift forward in a positive direction. In 2013, Bybee was promoted to Deputy Chief of Operations. During his tenure as Deputy Chief, Bybee helped secure funding for firefighter equipment and emergency vehicles, advocated for increased staffing to improve safety and effectiveness during emergency operations, strengthened the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program and implemented systems and safety measures to benefit both the organization and the community. He also strengthened relationships with local and regional partners and was a valued collaborator on several large projects impacting the fire district and its service to the community.
