At 11:00 on March 6th, 2024 South Metro Fire Rescue responded to the Costco on Park Meadows Center Drive for a odor of natural gas near the loading dock that was reported from several people. Engine 31 arrived and investigated what was causing the odor for nearly 45 minutes and requested Xcel to the scene and Tower 32 arrived and assisted with the investigation. Crews determined there was no problem with the gas utility, but a battery powered floor cleaner was found off-gassing hazardous fumes. The store was immediately evacuated, and a full hazardous materials response was requested. Approximately 500 shoppers and all employees evacuated the store and the Hazmat Team conducted further investigation. They safely removed the machine from the store and determined a lead-acid battery was malfunctioning. No fire, injuries or illness occurred, and SMFR verified the air levels inside were safe for the building to be reoccupied at 12:53. Additional information provided by South Metro Fire Rescue
