Colorado Springs Fire Department originally started out in 1872 as the Colorado Springs Hook and Ladder Company No. 1, named changed in 1873 to the Colorado Springs Fire Company. A second fire company, the Colorado Springs Hook and Ladder Company, was formed in 1875. The Matt France Hose Company No. 1.  and the W.S. Jackson Hose Company No. 2 was organized in 1878. In 1879 an unusual hose company was formed by a group of boys called the G.S. Barnes Hose Company with a smaller hose cart built just for them, but in 1883 with waning interest the company was disbanded and the hose cart was sold to Trinidad. In 1889 the C.B. Ferrin Hose Company was formed. In 1893 the V.Z. Reed Hose Company No. 6 was founded. Other companies that protected the city included C.R. Adams Hose Company and the Sinton Hose Company No. 7. On January of 1894, the city council voted to organize a paid fire department and that disband the volunteers.

Colorado Springs Fire Department took over the fire service form the Colorado City Fire Department (Colorado City Volunteer Hose Company No. 1), after the city of Colorado Springs annexed Colorado City in 1917. Colorado Springs took over fire service to the Stratton Meadows Fire Protection DistrictIvywild-Cheyenne Canon Volunteer Fire Department, and Skyway Fire Protection District in 1980 after the city of Colorado Springs annexed those suburbs. On January 1st, 2009, Colorado Springs Fire Department took over fire service from the Woodmen Valley Fire Protection District, covering all fires and medicals for the district. Colorado Springs Fire Department also took over the Colorado Centre Fire Department district from 2008 to 2009 until the district was re-formed as the Colorado Centre Metropolitan District Fire Department. In 2023, the City of Colorado Springs annexed the Colorado Centre community and on December 18th, 2023 at 08:00, Colorado Springs Fire Department took over service for Colorado Centre Metropolitan District Fire Department once again.
