Durango Fire Protection District was formed in 2002 with the consolidation of the Animas Fire Protection District, Hermosa Cliff Fire Protection District, Durango Fire Department and Mercy Ambulance.

Durango Fire & Rescue is comprised of 4 Staffed Stations, 1 Wildland Response Station, and 12 volunteer stations.

Durango Fire Protection District is dispatched by Durango / La Plata Emergency Communications Center.
