Stapleton International Airport started out as the Denver Municipal Airport in 1929, 630 acres with two dusty runways, one hanger, a tiny terminal and a windsock. On August 25th, 1944 the name was changed to Stapleton Airfield after Denver Mayor Benjamin F. Stapleton, and later to Stapleton International Airport.

Stapleton was replaced by the Denver International Airport in 1995, and airport operations with DIA ARFF began at a new location. At the time of the close, Stapleton had six runways and five terminal concourses on 7.3 square miles.
