Stapleton Airport
The 630 acre Denver Municipal Airport was dedicated in 1929 with two dusty runways, one hanger, a tiny terminal and a windsock. The airport saw many steady changes over the years, including fire protection. The above photo was taken in 1940 of the airport fire crews. On August 25th, 1944 the name was changed to Stapleton Airfield after Denver Mayor.
ENGINE 22
Engine Company 22 was organized on January 31st, 1946 at Stapleton Hanger 5.
Station 22
This station was originally called Station 22 and was re-designated as Airport Station 1 in 1966 when Denver Fire Department opened the new Station 22 at at 3530 S. Monaco Pkwy & Hampden. Station 22 dates back to the 1920’s when it protected the Denver Municipal Airport, and in 1944 it was renamed Stapleton Airfield.
WATER TENDER 22
Station 22 operated Denver Fire Department first and only water tender outside of Hanger 5, later Station 22. This water tanker was destroyed in a rollover accident.

Fire Station 22 was built in 1972 on Runway 35L.
Station 1
Fire Station 1 opened in 1983 with optimal access to all of the runways.

RESCUE SQUAD 2
(R-01) 1965 Ford F700 / Jacobs with local body works, also ran as Air/Lights 1, Hamer 1 & Rescue Squad 8. The body was re-mounted by SVI to a Chevy Cheyenne 3500 4×4 HD in 1994.
