At approximately 15:30 on April 13th, 2021 Colorado Springs Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of S Academy Blvd and Verde Dr. for a minor fuel spill. On scene, Engine 8 found diesel fuel steadily leaking out of a semi truck’s saddle tank and then requested a working HazMat response without Decon 20’s response. Engine 8 requested that HazMat 14, using HazMat 6’s apparatus bring dam booms and a barrel to remove the fuel. While waiting for the working assignment to arrived, Engine 8’s crew made a makeshift dam blocking a nearby storm drain. Once Engine 8 had completed the makeshift dam around the storm drain, Engine 23 was canceled. Battalion 2 arrived and assumed Verde Command from Engine 8. HazMat 14, using HazMat 6’s rig, arrived and deployed a catch-all under the leaking saddle truck and then pumped out the remaining fuel in the saddle tank. Approximately 75 gallons leaked out of the fuel tank and 50 gallons were pumped out of the tank.

Initial Response: Engine 8

Working HazMat Response: Engine 23 (Canceled), HazMat 14, Battalion 2 & Decon 20 (Canceled)
