Estes Valley Ice Rescue Training 2025
Estes Valley Fire Ice Rescue Training
On February 8th, 2025 firefighters from the Estes Valley Fire Protection District gathered for the field day of the Ice Rescue Training that they have been participating in. Students attended a classroom session on Thursday and on Saturday put the knowledge from the class to use on the ice of Lake Estes. Students completed self rescue drills as well as victim rescue drills. Victim rescue drills conducted included a single rescuer going out onto the ice, communicating with the victim and the shore support team. While communicating with both the victim and the support team the rescuer would hook the victim to a rope system to be pulled out of the water. The second drill conducted was with a single rescuer and a boogie board type of tool known as the Ice Rescue Board by Dive Rescue International. This board allows the victim to hold onto straps on the side while the rescuer slides the board between the victim’s torso and the ice to slide them out of the water easier. The field day consisted of recertification for several firefighters as well as new certifications for firefighters who had not participated in the class before.
