Phoenix Fire Department was founded in 1886 as the Phoenix Engine Company # 1. In 1887, the Aztec Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 was formed and later that year the Pioneer Hose Company No. 1 and Yucatec Hose Company No. 2 was formed. In 1888 all the volunteer fire companies united into the Phoenix Volunteer Fire Department. In 1922 the department changed from volunteer to a paid department, a full-time organization and became the Phoenix Fire Department.
