San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD), covering 49 square miles in San Francisco County (California) including the areas of Balboa Park, Bayview, Bernal Heights, Castro, China Basin, Chinatown, Central Richmond, Central Waterfront, Cow Hollow, Dodpatch, Dolores Heights, Double Rock, Double Triangle, East Cut, Embarcadero, Fillmore, Fishermans Wharf, Glen Park, Golden Gate Heights, Haight-Ashbury, Hayes Valley, Hunters Point, India Basin, Ingleside, Islais Creek, Jackson Square, Japantown, Lake Merced, Lakeside, Little Hollywood, Lower Haight, Merced Heights, Marina District, Mission Bay, Mission Dolores, Noe Valley, North Beach, Oceanview, Panhandle, Pacific Heights, Polk Gulch, Potrero Hill, Portola Place, Richmond, Somo, South Beach, South Basin, Sunnydale, Sunset, Sunnyside, Tenderloin, Visitacion Valley & Westwood Park.

San Francisco Fire Department started out in 1850 as the San Francisco Volunteer Fire Department with three companies called The San Francisco, The Empire, and The Protection Company, and in 1953 the Exempt Fire Company was formed. In 1866 the department became a paid department and was renamed San Francisco Fire Department.
