Station 9 Groundbreaking Ceremony

Eric Hurst – Aurora Fire Rescue

On March 28th, 2025 Aurora Fire Rescue held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Station 9, located at 17200 E. Mexico Ave. which will replace the previous firehouse demolished earlier this month. The new fire station will address the modern needs of Aurora’s firefighters and the growing community it serves. Aurora Fire Station 9, originally built in 1979, had long been a cornerstone of Aurora’s Ward III. A 2016 facility assessment concluded that the existing structure no longer meets the needs of the department or its personnel. Over the years, shifting soil caused structural damage, including cracks and gaps between walls and floors, further exacerbating the station’s inadequacy and ultimately prompting the decision to build a new station rather than renovate the existing space. The new two-story, 12,000-square-foot facility will feature 11 dorm rooms, eight bathrooms, a fitness room, a kitchen, dining areas, a day room, offices, and a state-of-the-art, double-length 3-bay apparatus bay. Designed with future expansion in mind, the new station will allow space for an additional firefighting company if needed. The $9.3 million project, funded primarily through the American Rescue Plan Act, is expected to be completed within the next 9-12 months. During construction, Station 9’s crew will continue to serve the local community from their temporary base at Station 8.
