At 16:00 on January 9th, Loveland Fire Rescue Authority was dispatched to a reported drowning on S. County Rd. 13 in Larimer County. As units were responding, the Loveland Emergency Communications Center (LECC) dispatcher obtained additional information indicating the drowning was in a pond behind the residence and eventually the dispatcher was able to determine that it was actually a horse in the water, not a person. The call was reconfigured to a large animal rescue response. Engine 50 arrived on scene and located a horse that had fallen through the ice in the center of a pond, the horse’s head was above the water/ice. Engine 50’s officer requested a boom truck from the City of Loveland Water and Power Department for a possible lift operation. Firefighters in ice rescue suits made their way to the horse and were able to secure it with a rope. A path was broken in the ice and eventually the horse was coaxed to walk to the shore with a bit of assistance from firefighters. The horse was warming up and recovering as crews were picking up equipment. Unfortunately the horse is almost completely blind and found a way through a fence ending up on the frozen pond and then in the water.
