Aurora MVA EV Fire

Around 15:30 on July 21st, 2026 Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a traffic collision at E. Quincy Ave. at S. Richfield St. Engine 6 and Ladder 6 arrived to find two vehicles involved, a pickup truck and a sedan with flames and smoke coming from the sedan. Firefighters quickly identified it as an electric vehicle, confirmed all occupants were safely out, and began fire suppression. Battalion 3 assumed command, Ladder 13 and Falck assisted with patient care, and two people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Engine 9 established a water supply to Engine 6 and hazmat responded to evaluate the hazards. To access the damaged lithium-ion battery pack, firefighters performed a “belly flip” by using a winch to carefully tip the vehicle onto its side. This exposed the underside of the vehicle, allowing crews to directly cool the burning battery. Although the fire was extinguished quickly, it took approximately 45 minutes of water application to cool the battery enough for the vehicle to be safely towed. While this process is time-consuming, it is significantly faster than allowing a damaged electric vehicle battery to burn itself out, which can take several hours.
