Aurora Basement Fire
Just after 12:30 on September 15th, 2026 Aurora Fire Rescue responded to the 500 block of N. Elmira St. after two callers reported a house fire. Engine 2 arrived to find flames coming from garbage bins against the front of the home. After quickly knocking down the exterior fire, firefighters entered the home and encountered high heat and heavy smoke. During their search, crews discovered a fire in the basement that had spread through a ground-level window to the trash bins outside. Firefighters searched the entire home and confirmed everyone was safely out. No injuries were reported. Investigators determined the fire was accidental and started by an unattended cooking griddle that had been left powered on near combustible material in a bedroom.
The fire caused major damage to the basement and first floor and displaced four adults. Information provided by Aurora Fire Rescue
