On March 23rd, 2026 around 14:30 Broomfield Public Safety Communications Center dispatched North Metro Fire Rescue District to a reported field fire in the area of Lowell Blvd. and W. 144th Ave. in Broomfield. Engine 64 arrived to a small active grass fire in flat terrain with a slow rate of spread just west of the Broomfield Remote Control Drone Airfield Park off Lowell Blvd. and started direct attack on the fire. The wind increased causing the fire to grow quickly and a requested was made for additional brush trucks to the scene. Battalion 62 arrived and requested a major incident tone and made a request for a pre-evacuation notice for the Wildgrass, Eagle River Run and Silverleaf neighborhoods including the Holy Family High School, Broomfield Water Treatment Plant and the Broomfield City Shops. Engine 63 arrived and laid a supply line from the hydrant on Lowell Blvd. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire and mop up in about an hour. Broomfield Police Department closed down Lowell Blvd. north of from W. 144th Ave. up to W. 149th Ave. during the incident. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and human caused. An individual using model rockets in dry grass sparked the fire.
