Wind Driven Wildland Fire

Approximately 12:45 on August 4th, 2008 West Metro Fire Rescue responded to a brush fire on Green Mountain from a lightning strike. Crews arrived to wind driven wildland fire with around a 20-acres, crews got control of the fire but winds picked up and shifted them west and threatened homes off W. 6th Ave & Indiana St. The 287 Wildland Fire Team was requested for more resources, and air support. Crews started structure protection of homes in the Mesa View Estates, Green Mountain Estates and Mesa Meadows subdivisions. Over 3,300 residents received reverse-911 calls with around 20 homes to evacuate. Crews used a combination of backfires, water as the winds shifted back into the open space area and away from homes in the area. The fire burned was contained by 20:30 with around 300 acres with no homes lost. The cause of the fire was from a lightning strike. No injuries were reported.
