Douglas County Saybrook Street House Fire

At 15:39 on March 9th, 2020 South Metro Fire Rescue responded to a reported house fire in the 9700 block of Saybrook St. in unincorporated Douglas County. Initial reports from the homeowner stated there was smoke in the the home, but no active fire. Engine 17 arrived on scene to a two-story residential with nothing showing in the offensive strategy. Engine 17 found a working fire in the basement and the fire was upgraded to a confirmed residential structure fire, and Engine 17 pulled a 1 3/4 hose line through the garage of the house for fire attack. During primary searches and checks for extension, Tower 45’s crew reported the fire had extended to the second floor of the house. Fire investigators later discovered the fire started in the basement, worked its way up the wall through the duct chase and into the second floor. Firefighters gained control of the fire and ventilated the structure. A total of four people were transported to the hospital – two with non-life threatening injuries and two for precautionary measures. Fire investigators ruled the fire to be accidental in nature and the cause is undetermined. A Douglas County building official determined the home was unsafe to return to, leaving the family displaced from their home and staying with friends at this time.
