South Metro Townhome Fire

At 14:57 on July 4th, 2021 South Metro Fire Rescue responded to a townhouse fire at 8192 S. Fillmore Way in Centennial, with South Metro Dispatch receiving multiple 911 calls. Responding crew observed a smoke plume from a distance and upon arrival they countered a large volume of fire consuming the back of the building. Firefighters stretched a hose line to the rear where they encountered a free-flowing natural gas line which was fueling the flames. Arapahoe County Sheriff Deputies evacuated residents in the building next door due to intense heat and leaking gas. Firefighters quickly extinguished all visible fire on the exterior and shut the gas off. Meanwhile, additional crews accessed the interior of the burning townhouses through the front doors to search for people inside and extinguish fire that extended into the first floor, second floor and attic space. Vertical ventilation was conducted on the roof to lift hot smoke and gasses inside the structure. The incident was placed under control within 30 minutes, but crews remained on scene for a few hours extinguishing hot spots and venting smoke. 1 adult was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation, 2 other adults were evaluated on scene by paramedics but did not want to go to the hospital. Initial 911 callers reported that a barbecue grill fire spread to the building and there were no immediate indications that fireworks were involved. The SMFR Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating what caused the fire. Additional information provided by South Metro Fire Rescue
