At 21:36 on December 10th, 2021 Grand Junction Regional Communications Center dispatched the Grand Junction Fire Department for a report of a residential structure fire in 2900 block of B 1/2 Rd. in Orchard Mesa. The 911 caller reported smoke on the west side of their crawlspace, a sound of an electrical issue and the entire second floor charged with smoke. Engine 4 and Ambulance 4 were first due, reporting smoke showing from the attic space of a single-family dwelling, and established B 1/2 command in the offensive strategy. Engine 4 pulled a line for fire attack while Ambulance 4 pulled past and staged their unit east and linking with Engine 4. First arriving deputy shut down the intersection of B 1/2 Rd. and 29 Rd. to allow companies to stretch 5” supply line from the hydrant at the northeast corner to the fire across the intersection. Captain 4 completed the 360 walk-around, noting a basement and established a working fire in the attic space, requesting second-due engine to grab the hydrant and pull a second line. Battalion 1 arrived and assumed command. Engine 2 arrived and laid into Engine 4 from the hydrant. Truck 1 arrived and pulled the second line from Engine 4, splitting crews for fire attack and utilities. Engine 3 arrived, staged on the west side of the intersection, and went on deck. At 21:54 Truck 1 recommended crews withdraw from the structure with fire through the roof on west side. Engine 4 experienced a deterioration of conditions inside with banking smoke and exited the structure for a defensive fire attack. Additional lines were stretched for fire attack and a master-stream was set-up from the aerial of Truck 6 to get water from above. Despite multiple lines deployed and aggressive efforts by crews, the fire consumed much of the house and continued to burn heavy through the roof. A command staff notification was sent for a working structure fire in the defensive strategy.

Unit on Scene: Battalion 1, Engine 4, Ambulance 4, Engine 2, Truck 1, Engine 3 & Truck 6.
