At approximately 15:30 on February 24th, 2021 Grand Junction Fire Department Engine 4 was dispatched to a smoke investigation outside in the area of the landfill, 3071 Hwy. 50. Engine 2 was able to clear training from 32 Rd. and Hwy. 50 and self-dispatch as the closest unit. Engine 2 arrived in the area with a column of smoke visible from the training center. Engine 4 requested the fire marshal be contacted to verify any controlled burns in the area. The Grand Junction Regional Communication Center received multiple 911 calls for the fire. Engine 2 made access to a vantage point and upgraded the assignment to a working brush fire and requested additional resources. Engine 4 and Brush 4 began making access into the fire, awaiting additional crews. The fire was first reported at approximately an acre. Additional mutual resources responded, and Battalion 1 held command with Fire Marshal 2220 assisting. The fire cause is unknown, and no structures were lost or threatened. Union Pacific did have railroad ties burn, and the exact size of the fire is unknown but was believed to have burned around 7 acres. Command was terminated shortly before 18:00 and crews were picking up into sundown.
