On March 7th, 20221 at 14:20 South Metro Fire Rescue responded to a reported residential structure fire in 7300 block of S. Wellington St. in Centennial. Tower 32 arrived to small two-story single-family structure with heavy black showing from the chimney, upgraded the call to a confirmed residential structure fire. Battalion Chief 1 arrived and assumed command on the Alpha side. Tower 32 stretched a hose line to the Alpha side and Medic 18 assigned as medical. Engine 42 secured the water supply to Tower 32. The occupants safely evacuated and searches of the home with thermal imaging cameras determined the fire was likely isolated inside the chimney. Dry chemical fire extinguishers were used to smother the burning creosote and control the fire, but high heat and smoke was still visible. A UAV with a thermal imaging camera was used to monitor conditions from above and consistently measured a 350°F temperature. Several crews remained on scene for over an hour opening the chimney flue, cooling it down and they confirmed that flames did not extend into the home.
