At 08:32 on December 23rd, 2022 South Metro Fire Rescue was dispatched to an inside smoke investigation at 5519 S. Windermere St. in Littleton. South Metro Emergency Communications advised Battalion 2 that a second caller had reported a fire in the laundry room and the call had been upgraded to a reported structure fire. Battalion 2 upgraded the assignment to a working fire with information being broadcasted on Ops 3 and Littleton PD’s channel. Littleton PD on scene reported heavy smoke, unable to make entry, and were trying to alert residents possibly still inside. Engine 11 arrived to a three-story apartment structure with heavy smoke showing from the Alpha-Bravo basement units, pulled a 1 3/4″ to the front door in the offensive mode and established Windermere Command. Engine 38 arrived and laid in a water supply to Engine 11. Ladder 12 arrived and was assigned primary search of the basement. Crews advanced a hose line inside and began searches of the smoke-filled structure. Medic 11 arrived and was assigned evacuation of the second and third floors. Battalion 2 arrived, assumed command on the Alpha side, and maintained the offensive strategy with units on scene going to work. Medic 12 arrived and was assigned Incident Medical with Battalion 1 performing a 360°. While the fire was being extinguished, firefighters located 2 residents inside and brought them out to safety. The incident was quickly placed under control and thankfully no injuries occurred. 24 apartment units were displaced, and the American Red Cross was on scene assisting residents. Investigators were unable to determine what caused the fire, damage was limited to the laundry room and no structural damage was found. Residents were allowed back into their apartments once an all clear was given. Additional information provided by South Metro Fire Rescue
