West Metro Basement Fire

At 23:55 on February 27th, 2022 West Metro Fire Rescue was alerted to a possible structure fire in the 1400 block of Benton St. in Lakewood. Jeffcom advised units enroute from 911 callers that flames and smoke are showing. Medic 1 arrived to a single-family structure with a working fire inside with heavy smoke from the front door. SAM 1 arrived and assumed command in the offensive strategy, and Engine 1 pulled a 1 3/4 to the Charlie side for primary search and fire attack with Medic 1 and Medic 11. Engine 2 arrived on scene and secured the water supply to Engine 1 and Engine 3 pulled a 2nd line. District 2 arrived and took over command on the Alpha-Bravo corner, and assigned Engine 16 as RIT and reassigned Medic 11 as medical group. Crews found fire in the basement that extended to the main floor. The fire was put under control at 00:30 and crews started overhaul. The house was found vacant, but being used as a shelter by people experiencing homelessness. No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.
