On November 21st, 2023 around 19:00 West Metro Fire Rescue was alerted to a structure fire in an abandoned building near W. 13th Ave. and Chase St. in Lakewood. Jeffcom advised that multiple callers reporting flames from a garage type structure with possible parities inside. Engine 1 arrived and updated the address to small single-story abandoned building and pulled a line in for fire attack. Crews found fire in the attic space and got control of the fire quickly. The building was being used as a shelter by unhoused people, one of several empty structures in the area. The fire was one of more than a half dozen fires in a two block area that West Metro has responded to this year. Cause is under investigation.
