West Metro Structure Fire

On May 24th, 2023 around 06:30 Jeffcom dispatched West Metro Fire Rescue to a confirmed structure fire in the 9900 block of W. Wesley Ave. in Lakewood with multiple callers. Engine 8 arrived on scene to a small two-story single-family with a working fire with an extended lay and smoke showing, advanced a horizontal standpipe for fire control with Medic 8 and Tower 8 started search. Engine 8 advised of a burn victim on the Alpha side and requested additional medic to the scene. District 2 arrived and assumed command on the Alpha-Bravo corner in the offensive strategy. Crews were advised of possibly 22 cats trapped inside. Firefighters rescued 11 cats that were transported by Medic 10 to a local animal hospital. The fire was put under control at 06:50 and crews continued with overhaul and the investigation. Medic 4 transported the homeowner to a hospital with serious injuries and Medic 12 transported four other patients with unknown injuries. One cat and a dog died in the fire, and several other cats were unaccounted for at this time. The fire started in the living room and the cause was electrical with heavy fire damage to the room of origin and the adjacent kitchen. The American Red Cross was requested for assistance.
