Range 121C Fire

At approximately 10:30 on February 25th, 2024 El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center began receiving reports of an outside fire on Fort Carson caused by possible training exercises being conducted on post. Information was transferred to Fort Carson 911, who then dispatched Fort Carson Fire & Emergency Services Engine 1914 and Brush 1944 to investigate the area of Range 121C – Route 8. Upon arrival units found an area 1000 meters by 500 meters burning with active fire and requested a strike team of type 6 engines from outside agencies. Southern Colorado Interagency Wildland Fire Team was mobilized to aid in staffing resources from Security, Fountain, and Hanover. Brush 1943 gave an initial size up of approximately 200 acres in light fuels with a moderate rate of spread to the east. Crews began to dig line north of Route 8 to contain the fire, while Battalion 1902 took over incident command. As the crews worked to dig a line around the fire, both El Paso County 911 and Colorado Springs 911 continued to receive calls regarding the fire overloading the two dispatch centers. At 17:00 command advised dispatch the fire has been mopped up with a burn pit in the black with cottonwoods affect. Crews returned to service for the evening and return over the next couple of days to check for hot spots. As of February 27th, 2024 the fire was reported to be 100 percent contained.
