At 03:15 June 23rd, 2024 Strasburg Fire Protection District and Byers Fire Protection District were dispatched to a transformer down in the 7600 block of Strasburg Road. First arriving Quint 81 found that a vehicle had sheared off a utility pole and fled the scene. The downed pole sparked a brush fire that posed an immediate threat to a nearby structure, necessitating an aggressive structure protection effort by Quint 81 and Byers units. A large brush fire response was also requested from the I-70 corridor. Upon arrival Battalion Chief 91 assumed command of a large brush fire in medium fuels moving quickly to the north and east. A separate radio channel was requested for water operations and brush units assigned to the north, east and south sides of the fire. An urgent request was made to CORE Electric to remotely deenergize the downed line. The fire was controlled within 30 minutes and extensive mop-up was required. The exposed structure did not suffer any damage. The case was referred to Colorado State Patrol for follow-up on the hit and run.
